How to update your MCS-150 online in Motus
You file the MCS-150 biennial update yourself, for free, in Motus, FMCSA's registration system. Log in with Login.gov, complete identity verification, claim your existing USDOT number as the company official, then submit the biennial update and certify it.
Before you start
- Your USDOT number, and ideally your due date.
- Access to the email address used as the company official's Login.gov email. FMCSA says to use the same Login.gov email that was the company official in the old FMCSA Portal when you claim your USDOT number.
- Current company details: legal name, addresses, type of operation, cargo, number of power units and drivers, and annual mileage. See what the form asks.
Step by step
- Create your user profile. Go to motus.dot.gov, sign in with Login.gov and complete identity verification. Profiles belong to one person; companies manage who can act for them.
- Claim your USDOT number. If you already have a USDOT number, the company official claims it to create the company account in Motus. This imports your existing company record so you don't retype it.
- Review your company information. Check every section against how you operate today: names and addresses, operation type, cargo, vehicles, drivers and mileage.
- Submit the biennial update and certify it. Motus lists submitting a biennial update among the registration actions in your company account. Certify that the information is true.
- Check it went through. Search your USDOT number in Motus Public Search to see your registration record.

Common snags
- The company official's email doesn't match. Claiming works through the company official's Login.gov email. If that person has left, contact FMCSA before you try workarounds.
- Identity verification stalls. FMCSA links identity verification help and FAQs from the Move into Motus page.
- Your update doesn't show in other tools yet. Public data sets, including the census data this site uses, can take time to reflect a filing. Motus is the official record.
FMCSA has temporarily suspended enforcement of biennial updates, and the inactivation of USDOT numbers for missing them, while carriers move to Motus. Carriers whose update was due on or after June 1, 2026 get extra time. The update is still required. (FMCSA notice, last updated September 10, 2026; checked September 30, 2026.)

FMCSA moved registration to Motus, which launched on May 19, 2026. Its Move into Motus page lists submitting biennial updates as a Motus task.
Why does Motus need identity verification?
Motus uses Login.gov and identity verification to protect company records and stop others from changing them. You complete it the first time you log in.
